How to: Create an External link to use with an Aware notification

Last modified: Monday October 23, 2023.

When creating rules, you can configure an External link action and embed the result of that action in email or webhook notifications. Then, when the rule triggers, a link is included in either the email notification, or the webhook, so that the relevant people are able to easily view the event.

The External link action only creates the shared clip when the rule triggers - it does not notify anyone that the rule has triggered.

Task — Create the External link

External links are only available with Security rules. You cannot create shared links for System rules.

  1. Choose Tools Tools > Rules Rules.
  2. Follow the instructions to configure the relevant type of rule.
See About: Alta Aware rule types.
  3. In the rule you are creating, select External link from the Actions section of the Rules dialog box.
  4. Enter a Title for the Shared link.
  5. Enter a Description for the shared link.

This description is used to identify the link when the rule triggers. The description is displayed in Shared Clips.

To use the available template items, click + Show template parameters.

  6. Define the number of days that the external link will remain available.
  7. (Optional) Select Allow viewer to download.
  8. Click Done.

When you have configured your shared link, add the $externalLink template parameter to either an Email or Webhook notification. Once triggered, the link to the video is then displayed in the relevant notification.
